In 1909 a group of black citizens got together and formed the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club (named for a South African tribe), also known as the Krewe of Zulu. Conversations and interviews with older members indicate that, back in the day, the city was divided into wards, and each ward had its own group or “Club.” The Tramps were one such group. At Poydras Street, the Krewe takes a left turn. They parade down Jackson to St. Charles Avenue where they take a left turn. These changes come not only from the collapse but from the two tragic incidents that have occurred near their normal Mid City route. Heretofore, to see the Zulu parade, you had to travel the so-called “back streets” of the Black neighborhoods.
